Bario Sarawak

Journey into Bario with MasWing

Intro | Le Journey

Woke up like 5 in the morning to catch my flight from Kuching- Bintulu – Miri at 0645.

It’s my first time taking an ATR (the name of this plane type) and also MASwings.

MASwings is a regional airline operating East Malaysia and BIMP-EAGA  region. The BIMP-EAGA region consists of Borneo, South Philipines, and East Indonesia (Sulawesi and Papua).

The plane is about three times smaller the size of a Boeing but still very cozy.

*Bucket up!*

As it’s my first time taking an ATR, I was very attentive to the safety video. #Firsttimeinmyhistory Hahah well, just in case there’s an emergency, I know where to jump out from. LOL

As ATR is smaller..

LOL. Really. Here’s a photo as proof.

Very friendly stewardess and she looks cuter and younger in person ^ v ^

We did a transit at Bintulu before reaching Miri, it was a 20 minutes stop.

And the best part, little snacks are provided~ Really save my life there as I was dead hungry.

I had two rounds of it. Hehehe. One from my Kuching – Bintulu trip and another from Bintulu-Miri trip.

*noms noms*

After 2 hours including the Bintulu stop, I reached Miri Airport!

This is my first time here and it reminds me of Kuching’s old airport.

After some ding dongs, we’re ready to depart for Bario. Wheee!!! Although, both of us are taking different flights and routes but still Wheeee!!

MASwings is the sole airlines into Bario.

But this time we’re not taking an ATR but a Twin Otter instead.

It’s a very cute plane, a 16 seaters if not mistaken.

See how cozy it is.

Their DSLR is giving them out that they are not Bario locals, everyone is excited to go into Bario and also taking the Twin Otter. The feeling of taking a Twin Otter is very different from the bigger airplanes like  Boeing or ATR. I would suggest everyone to experience at least once in their lifetime.

The Twin Otter flew at a low altitude and you can have a very great view of the land below.

The rate of deforestation is scary in Sarawak.

Finally some greenies but sadly somewhere around this part will be flooded for dams.

That’s the road to Bario and other villages. It takes 10 hours to reach Bario whereas 50 minutes by MASWing.

Taking a Twin Otter really feels like a bird flying through the sky.

That’s the legendary Batu Lawi, the landmark of Kelabit Highland, it’s a mystical and sacred mount among the Kelabit and Penan people.

And not long after that, we reached Bario. Wheee !! 😀

Thank you MASwings

Bario airport. 😀

It was a sunny day yet the wind is very cooling.

Alright! Now I can’t wait to get eat Kelabit Food!!

Bario Food Festival. Next >>

Bario Sarawak Trip

How To Get Into Bario?

So last month, I received a call from a friend…

Before we get into Bario, let’s talk about Bario.

I bet a lot of you have never heard of this place before this.

Because it is up in the highland, it is basically isolated from the rest of Sarawak and it’s people. Yet, the legend of it’s cool weather, unique food and gorgeous Kelabit girls has been spreading among the low land dwellers for centuries.

Bario is having their Bario Food Festival last month, and so me and my friend find this a great opportunity, reason and time to visit the mysterious Bario for once.

So how do we get into Bario Highland? Well here’s a short guide I made for you, if you’re interested to go after my Bario travel posts.

Opps. hahaha.

Well, it was a spontaneous trip. We almost didn’t manage to get into Bario in time for the Food Festival. ^ ^”

My Last Stop of My Roadtrip across Sarawak! Limbang!

Continue from  Sarawak Trip: Part 1 | 2 | 3 | Ghost In Bintulu |3.5 | 4.0 | Brunei

Bid Brunei farewell and we are now at the Limbang!!! \(@ ̄∇ ̄@)/

except this, I actually have not much knowledge about this land.

I heard that it is a strategic location for business as they get many Brunei tourists came to this town to buy vegetables, fruits and groceries over the weekend.

There’s only one shopping complex in this town which happens to have a hotel above it and that’s where I stayed..

So yeah, no paranormal activities that night. ^^”

As we will be leaving the town around noon the next day, I woke up super early to catch a glimpse of the place before we left.

Limbang division has two towns, Limbang Town and Lawas town which located on the other side of Limbang after Brunei and next to Sabah.

The hotel + shopping complex.

The shopping complex cater the needs of the 40,000 people who stayed in this town. The businesses here are doing great since there are no other competitors. Open a bubble tea stall/shop, confirm you will be counting your money until you forgot what is frown. ( ★ω★)

Tua Pek Kong temple. There’s one in every single towns and cities I covered in this Sarawak Roadtrip series.

The trapped mist on the hills makes me feel as if I’m on the highland near the clouds.

You can get to Labuan with this express boat which only costs you RM24 per round trip.

Found these freshly made and bbq fishcakes in the wet markets.

Only RM1 per stick, so cheap can die.  (๑>ᴗ<๑)

Here’s the old part of the town.

Old shops *imaging turning them into hipster cafes* ( ´ ▽ ` )

Woohooo a Tamu Pagi (morning market) !!  (((o(*゚▽゚*)o)))

I love local market!! Sometimes when I go to a market like this feels like as if I’m going for a treasure hunt and I never know what interesting stuffs are waiting there to surprise me.

And just a 2 minutes walk, I saw this…

The clams are as big as the lady’s fist!!!

WAHH  some almost the size of the coconut!!

Too bad I don’t eat clams. ( ̄ω ̄)

Have anyone tried this kind of durian before?

I didn’t buy it as i don’t feel like having durian that time. Now, I kinda regret. T^T

I shall called it Blood Durian! coz I want and it sounds cooler. LOL #sukahatisaja

I bought this tho! This is called Tahai!!

A type of dried smoked fish. And it tasted awesome!!!! O(≧∇≦)O

If you like fish and you like smokey taste!

Then mix it with sambal and rice and you have Nasi Tahai!!

My first and last meal in Limbang. ( ̄~ ̄)

On our way out of Limbang, we dropped by a Museum / Fort Limbang.

Rajah Brooke, the Rajah of Sarawak Kingdom build fort in all major town back in the old days to protect the people from Pirates. This fort was build in the year 1887.

It looks more like a banglo than a fort ( ̄ー ̄)

Now it is a Museum document the history and people of Limbang.

Well, I shall see you again in future, Limbang, the town of Buffaloes.

Hopefully, I can revisit all the town and cities of Sarawak again but as a tourist instead of a passerby.

Well, that ends my Sarawak Roadtrip. Now to go home..

It takes 12-14 hours to travel from Miri to Kuching depending on how fast you drive.

The journey is not only long but dangerous as well..

Seriously!! There were many close calls!!!  (╬⁽⁽ ⁰ ⁾⁾ Д ⁽⁽ ⁰ ⁾⁾)

That’s the end of my Sarawak Roadtrip Series. Hope you enjoyed.
